Cherry blossoms, or (桜) sakura in Japan, are famous worldwide. But have you ever thought about why? Of course, they are beautiful, but what makes them truly popular is more than just their appearance and uniqueness—it is also the meaning behind them.
History of Sakura
Sakura have strong ties to Japan’s history, culture, and identity. Originally, they were used to divine the year’s harvest, and later they came to embody the wabi-sabi philosophy and Shinto ideals of impermanence, hope, and renewal.
Significance of Sakura
1. The embodiment of beauty and mortality
The bloom of sakura is magnificent, but the flowers and trees are short-lived, lasting for only about two weeks. The short blooming period is often compared to the transient nature of life. It reminds us that every beginning has an end and that life is beautiful yet brief.
2. Winter to Spring – A transition of new life
The blooming of sakura marks the transition from winter to spring. In Japan, this seasonal change is also associated with life transitions. April marks the beginning of the new academic school year and the new fiscal year for many companies. During this period, people often start new jobs, move to new places, or begin new chapters in their lives.
Things to Do – Hanami
During the spring season, when sakura bloom, (お花見hanami) flower viewing is one of the most significant activities for locals. This is the time when friends and family gather for picnics and small parties under the cherry blossom trees, bonding together while appreciating the beauty of sakura.
Many travelers come to see the sakura, take photos, and leave. However, the Tabigo team recommends taking 1-2 hours to find a nice spot for a picnic and simply take a break from everything. It is a great opportunity to spend quality time with the people around you and truly enjoy the moment. After all, traveling is not only about seeing places, but also about slowing down, relaxing, and creating meaningful memories together. 😊
