When we talk about winter in Japan, the first spot that pops into Malaysians' minds is probably Hokkaido. But hey, the Tabigo team is here today to let you in on a little secret: Hokkaido isn't the only gem for chasing those magical snowy scenes from the hit movie First Love! 😉

Today, let us show you the 4 hidden favourites that locals love exploring during wintertime!

Oirase Gorge (Aomori)

Aomori is located in the northern part of Japan, right before Hokkaido. The Frozen Oirase Gorge is definitely one of those hidden gems that most tourists overlook. However, the magical wonderland scenes from its stunning frozen waterfalls will create an unforgettable experience you never want to miss. We suggest spending a few days here, stopping by other spots like the Towada Art Museum, winter activities, night illuminations, onsen experiences, and more.

Zao (Yamagata)

Zao is a place famous for its winter activities, onsen, and the legendary Snow Monsters. The Snow Monsters (juhyo) are a rare natural phenomenon where ice builds up as fog and clouds blow over tree trunks and branches in sub-zero temperatures. This unique, spectacular scenery is said to be visible only in Japan. If you're a big fan of winter activities, you can enjoy a stay at the Zao Onsen Ski Resort. We also recommend trying the local cuisine, soaking in the onsen, and catching the night illuminations here.

Misotsuchi Icicles (Saitama)

The magnificent icicles of Misotsuchi are located in Chichibu, Saitama—the closest spot to central Tokyo and perfect for a day trip. The fabulous part about the Misotsuchi Icicles is that they're all naturally formed. With an entry fee of just 200 yen, you can also catch the night illuminations reflecting off the icicles in the evening. While this sparkling event runs only from mid-January to late February, make sure to always check their website before planning your visit.

Shirakawa-go (Gifu)

The Historic Villages of Shirakawa-gō and Gokayama are one of Japan's UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It's always our most popular tour at Tabigo, famous for its deep snow blanketing the farmhouses and those magical winter light-up scenes. However, due to the mandatory advance reservations and the inconvenience of transportation, it's usually easier to access via a tour or private vehicle. That's why our customers always opt for our custom tours for hassle-free travel.

We hope today's blog gives you more ideas on where to go during this winter. Don't forget the Tabigo team is all geared up to craft a custom itinerary just for you—hassle-free transfers, insider tips, and all the cozy onsen stops along the way. 😎
