Malaysian First-Time Ski/Snowboard in Japan? Beginner Guide + Tips

It is peak winter season now in Japan, and we believe quite a number of travellers are here to try winter activities. Especially for us Malaysians, being able to see snow and experience winter activities is really rare, so we usually want to try it at least once in our lifetime.
However, as a snowboard fan myself, I often see a lot of first-timers choosing the wrong way to start their winter activities, which ends up ruining their experience. Today, let the expert local Tabigo team share some tips with you so you can enjoy your first winter activities to the fullest!
Know “Japow”
First of all, if you come to Japan during winter, not only can you have a chance to try winter activities—you’re also lucky enough to experience one of the best snow qualities in the world. “Japow” is short for Japan Powder Snow.
This is thanks to Japan’s unique geography: most ski resorts here offer that famous light, fluffy, dry powder snow that creates an incredible, almost weightless riding experience that’s really hard to find in other countries. (In contrast, many other countries tend to have heavier, icy, or hard-packed surfaces.)
1: How to Choose the Correct Ski Resort
As a beginner, it is recommended to avoid choosing a famous ski resort. Why? Because you’ll see a bunch of other beginners crowding the beginner area, and there won’t even be enough space to slide down properly. You end up constantly bumping into other beginners and can’t really practice. 😩
Most famous ski resorts like Gala Yuzawa or Hakuba are popular because of their huge, well-equipped courses, but if you’re a first-timer, you’ll most likely only be able to explore a few beginner routes. That makes it a total waste to go to these big resorts as a beginner.
Tabigo Japan Recommended Local Ski Resorts for Beginners:
- Yuzawa-Nakazato (Niigata)
- Minakami Kogen Ski Resort (Gunma)
- Joetsu Kokusai Ski Resort (Niigata)
- Tsugaike Kogen Ski Resort (Nagano)
- Rusutsu Resort (Hokkaido)
2: Most Common Mistakes for Beginners
If you’re trying winter activities for the first time, do not buy a 1-day lift ticket. The reality for most beginners is that you'll spend most of your time just practicing the basics: how to stand, slide, and stop. It sounds easy, but it could actually take up 1 or 2 days, depending on how good you are. Hence, instead of a 1-day lift ticket, it's actually more worth it to start with coupon tickets(回数券), then move to a half-day lift ticket if needed.
Pro tip from Tabigo: Check for beginner packages that bundle discounted half-day tickets + rentals + lessons.
3: How to Dress for Winter Activities
This part can be especially tricky for us Malaysians! Including myself, I’ve heard from several Malaysian friends who didn’t even think to wear snow boots when you’re going for a place full with snow. (It sounds like common sense, but honestly it just doesn’t install in our Malaysian minds 😂)
Also, you might think “It’s snow everywhere, it’ll be freezing!” — partially true, but not when you’re actually snowboarding or skiing. Your body heats up quickly from moving, so you won’t feel as cold as you expected. That means don’t overdress!
Our advice: A heat-thermal inner layer + a good snowboard/ski jacket (and pants) is good enough.
4: More Tips for Beginners
Everyone knows winter activities can feel hardcore at first. You’ll fall endless time and wake up sore all over the next day. That’s why we always recommend our first-timer customers to wear protection pants and wrist protectors right from the start. It might sound like no big deal, but it makes a huge difference in comfort and confidence. Secondly, book an instructor for your first session. You’ll save tons of time and energy on trial-and-error (basically fall way less lol). These small choices turn a tough start into a fun one, and trust me, your body will thank you after!
We always advise our customers to schedule their winter sport activities toward the last few days of their trip, because you don’t want to kick off your journey with body aches everywhere… That said, our private chartered services are always your go-to solution to ease all those worries. If planning all this sounds like too much hassle, just hit us up for a custom tour and we’ll handle the entire itinerary, bookings, and logistics for your perfect winter trip. 😉
